Thomas arose and looked around the walled garden, suppressing a sense of panic. Noticing a door in the wall, he ran to it. It was locked.
Panic growing, he turned around and an intricately carved podium appeared on which a half-played game of chess sat on top. Looking closer, he saw words begin to appear around the chessboard:
“Play if you will, but know
The key to much more do I hold.
Others have tried, to no avail
A testament theirs, if you fail.
One move you get
And one will be check,
Either for you Or for me.”

I have been challenged to write a short story every week, inspired by a one-word prompt. The only catch is that the story has to be EXACTLY 100 words. The one-word prompt for this story was 'Chessboard'. .
